- Sure, it could easily be defeated if you have the tools and know how. But
- if that machine is in a store and HDToolBox hasn't been installed, no one
- will be able to defeat it unless they bring them in on disks. Also it
- would be good enough to protect the system from new user that don't know
- what they are doing. Deprotecting a partition should be difficult.
- The best way to do it in HDToolBox is to leave out any interface link
- (gadget, menu) to the (de)protect and require them to hit a key combination
- that they only find out about in the docs. If they don't read the docs,
- they won't know about it.
-
- This is much cheaper than putting a bunch of new security hardware in it.
- All this would require is a slight change in the RDB format, kickstart
- and HDToolBox. I think they are going to have to change the RDB anyway to
- fix the max 4GB drive size, they might as well add security features into
- it at the same time. With the security system enabled, it wouldn't matter
- if you booted from the hard drive, floppy or whatever. It just wouldn't
- be able to disturb the contents of the protected volume. They should put
- provisions in it to make it password read and/or read-write protected.
- Also the system should password restrict write access to the RDB &
- filesystem blocks to keep viruses from destroying it or infecting the
- fs blocks.
